چکیده

People have difficulty reasoning with information to do with uncertain situations, including when making economic decisions. This is especially true when decisions require the calculation of conditional probabilities. Putting the data in terms of natural frequencies as promoted by Gigerenzer (2002) makes it easier for people to reason in situations of uncertainty. Unfortunately, it invokes the normally false assumption that the frequency information is precise. The use of simple graphical techniques can help to resolve this problem, providing a tool that can be used for making decisions in uncertain situations when the probabilistic information is imprecise and thus ambiguity exists.

Ambiguity , the certainty illusion , and the natural frequency approach to reasoning with inverse probabilities

People have difficulty reasoning with diagnostic information in uncertain situations, especially when an understanding and calculation of inverse conditional probabilities (Bayes theorem) is required. While natural frequency representations of inference tasks improve matters, they suffer from three problems: (1) calculation errors persist with a majority of subjects; (2) the representation suff...

Teaching Bayesian reasoning in less than two hours.

The authors present and test a new method of teaching Bayesian reasoning, something about which previous teaching studies reported little success. Based on G. Gigerenzer and U. Hoffrage's (1995) ecological framework, the authors wrote a computerized tutorial program to train people to construct frequency representations (representation training) rather than to insert probabilities into Bayes's ...

A good representation can be crucial for finding the solution to a problem. Gigerenzer and Hoffrage (Psychol. Rev. 102 (1995) 684; Psychol. Rev. 106 (1999) 425) have shown that representations in terms of natural frequencies, rather than conditional probabilities, facilitate the computation of a cause’s probability (or frequency) given an effect – a problem that is usually referred to as Bayesi...

Fiscal Illusion in Iranian Economy Emphasizing the Five-Dimensional Indicators and the NARDL Approach

The phenomenon of fiscal illusion has always been an intriguing topic in the public finance literature. Fiscal illusion is a concept in which misinterpretation of fiscal parameters and tax expenses and liabilities lead to bias in budgetary decision making at all levels of the government. The current research presents an empirical analysis of the fiscal illusion in the Iranian economy, using fiv...

Natural frequencies improve Bayesian reasoning in simple and complex inference tasks

Representing statistical information in terms of natural frequencies rather than probabilities improves performance in Bayesian inference tasks. This beneficial effect of natural frequencies has been demonstrated in a variety of applied domains such as medicine, law, and education. Yet all the research and applications so far have been limited to situations where one dichotomous cue is used to ...
